IMPORTANT! Important info if you are continuing towards Rostadalen: The bridges over Iselva and Trollelva are damaged. Attempts to cross them are discouraged and done at your own risk. NB! At least one person in the hiking party MUST be a member to use Troms Turlag’s cabins. Only members can purchase a DNT key. Gappohytta is beautifully and openly situated along the E1 route in northern Indre Troms, right up to the Swedish border, inviting exciting trips in the nature of the neighboring country. A great alternative is to follow the marked route to Pältsastugan, Sweden’s northernmost cabin. This is an exciting trip that, among other things, takes you across an interesting landscape with high moraine ridges. The cabin cluster consists of several cabins. Old Gappo from 1973, New Gappo from 1984, and the latest addition is a dog annex from 2008. Location: Rognli-Gappohytta: 11 km, 3-4 hours. From the parking lot below Rognli farm, follow the cart track along Paraselva into Parasdalen. Where the road ends, you angle onto a dry path uphill on the NE side of the valley to the plains south of Barras. After passing the upper part of Paraselva, continue in the same direction under the NE slopes to Njearrelahku in gently rising terrain until Gappohytta. In winter, one should follow the snowmobile trail up from Rognli, but turn off towards Gappo when you get above the tree line. Rooms: New Gappo has 10 sleeping places distributed in 2 bedrooms (4 in each) and 2 sleeping places in the living room. Old Gappo has 10 sleeping places distributed in 2 bedrooms (4 in each) and 2 sleeping places in the living room. The dog annex has 4 sleeping places. There is an outhouse at the cabin cluster. Equipment: Old Gappo has a solar power system and 12V for light and USB charging via the solar panel. All Troms Turlag cabins have a wood-burning stove for heating, gas burners for cooking, and necessary kitchen equipment. All cabins, except those close to towns, have duvets and pillows. Bring a sleeping bag liner or sleeping bag. It is recommended to bring candles, matches, and toilet paper for personal use, in case they are missing at the cabin. Water: Drinking water is fetched from the river. Follow the trail towards Golda to the river. In winter, one must be careful not to fall through the ice. Preferably go in pairs. Dogs: There is a separate dog annex with 4 beds for those traveling with a dog. There are 3 dog crates in the outer hallway. The dog annex is reserved for visitors with dogs, but as with the cabins themselves, unused beds are released at 9 PM, and then guests without dogs can use them. It is possible to have dogs in the outer hallway of New Gappo, but the hallway is small. Dogs are not allowed in common rooms and bedrooms. Old Gappohytta is dog-free. Commercial use of Troms Turlag’s cabins: All businesses and commercial operators who bring guests and groups to Troms Turlag’s cabins must contact the tour association office well in advance of each trip to arrange this. There are special prices for commercial groups; information about prices can be read here. Prices are regardless of whether individuals are members or not. One person in the group must have a valid DNT membership. Only members can get access to the key. All guests in the group must be registered in the visitor log. NB! The cabins must not be used by businesses and commercial operators on weekends, during winter and Easter holidays, public holidays (Ascension Day, Pentecost), as well as May 1 and May 17. Activities: From Gappohytta, you can take leisurely strolls in the local area or use the cabin as an overnight stop on longer routes. From Gappo, there is a summer-marked route to the Golda cabins in the east, and to the Rostahyttene in the southwest (through Isdalen). The trip through Isdalen is a great hike. The trail to Pältsastugan from Gappo runs along the top of what is Northern Europe’s longest moraine ridge, a beautiful trail with extensive views. It is further 11 km from Gappo to Rognli and the nearest road. Other: Mobile coverage: No coverage at the cabin. Coverage via the Finnish network when you walk approx. 1.5 km from the cabin down towards Rognli. Then you will have coverage until you reach Piggsteinen or Nåla, which is approx. 2.6 km down towards Rognli. You pass the first stream valley and follow the path up to the next hill, then you will have a clear view of the mast on Saanafjellet, located in Finland just north of Kilpisjærvi.
