Naturstyrelsen owns an area of 12 hectares on Avernakø, where, in connection with an EU-funded LIFE project, ponds have been created to promote the habitats of the European Fire-bellied Toad. This has been successful, and Avernakø now houses one of only 8-9 populations of European Fire-bellied Toads found in Denmark. Most recently, Naturstyrelsen, in collaboration with Faaborg Midtfyn Kommune and Geopark det Sydfynske Øhav, has installed a picnic house, shelter, and toilet on the island. The site is scenically located with a view of and access to the water.
