Naturstyrelsen owns a 12 ha area on Avernakø, where, in connection with an EU-supported LIFE project, ponds have been established to promote the habitats of the fire-bellied toad. This has been successful, and Avernakø now hosts one of only 8-9 populations of fire-bellied toads found in Denmark. Most recently, Naturstyrelsen, in collaboration with Faaborg Midtfyn Kommune and Geopark det Sydfynske Øhav, has installed a picnic shelter, shelter, and toilet on the island. The site is beautifully situated with views and access to the water.
