Historic Vangshaugen is located by Storvatnet in Grødalen, right at the foot of Sunndalsfjella’s high peaks. On the hike into Vangshaugen, from Gjøra in Sunndalen, you pass old mountain farms and mighty waterfalls before Grødalen opens up with rivers, lakes, and lush hillsides. At Vangshaugen, you will quickly be captivated by the place’s architectural and interior design treasures. Vangshaugen, along with Lady Arbuthnott’s sports villa Alfheim a little further west in Grødalen, are two cultural-historical gems in the valley. The buildings clearly speak of a bygone era from the infancy of mountain tourism in Norway. Like Todalshytta further north, Vangshaugen was erected by the English businessman Ethelbert Lort-Phillips and used as a hunting and fishing residence for wealthy Britons. Vangshaugen is an excellent starting point for mountain hikes in Sunndalsfjella. Here you can embark on longer trips to other cabins in the area. There are marked routes to Gammelsetra, Raubergshytta, Grøvudalshytta, and Eiriksvollen. You can, of course, stay permanently at the cabin and go on day trips to some of the nearby peaks. With a fishing rod along the waterways, you can try your fishing luck and perhaps catch a large trout. On UT.no, you will find several suggestions for trips from Vangshaugen. Local trail report/poster for Vangshaugen: After storm Amy, many trees have fallen across the trail between Vangshaugen and Svisdal. We encourage those walking the route to keep a good distance from trees and uprooted trees across the trail. Staffed summer season: Vangshaugen is staffed from June 10 to September 15. During the staffed season, Vangshaugen offers approximately 50 beds distributed among 2-bed and 4-bed rooms. A sleeping sheet or personal bedding must be brought or rented at the cabin. Prices for staffed cabins 2026 here. Dining: Vangshaugen has a full liquor license and serves a 3-course dinner in the evening. If you are hiking in the area and only wish for food service, that is also possible; we have simple dishes during the day, and day visitors can also purchase dinner in the evening. Activities: Vangshaugen offers a library, rowboat rental, canoe rental, and SUP board rental. Enjoying the evening in the courtyard or taking a walk around the lake is recommended. Beyond this, dogs are not allowed in common areas, due to consideration for allergy sufferers. Tent: Tenting is not facilitated. If you are sleeping in a tent, remember to pay for a day visit/tent, and that the tent should be placed a good distance from the cabin. For stays at the cabin after 6 PM, standard overnight rates apply. WiFi: There is WiFi at Vangshaugen. SoMe: Vangshaugen has its own Facebook page and Instagram account where information and updates are regularly posted during the summer season. Self-service season: Autumn - Winter - Spring: 15.09.25 - 10.06.2026 Booking and payment for accommodation and provisions: It is now possible to book/reserve a bed at our cabins. Approximately half of the bed capacity at the cabin is allocated for this. Bed reservations can be made via each individual cabin on UT.no or on DNT hyttebestilling. Provisions are paid using the new DNT app. It is important to note that bed reservations are only valid until 7 PM on the day you have booked. If you wish to pay after your stay, use the new DNT app. This can be downloaded from Play or App Store. Before your trip, we recommend the checklist. Should difficulties arise with payment/using the payment app, you will find information on how to contact us at the cabin. It is important to note that reservations are only valid until 7 PM on the day you have booked. The DNT key: Some of our cabins, including Vangshaugen, are locked with a DNT key. We have several sales points for the key; see overview and information on our website (scroll down a bit) here. If you land by plane at Kvernberget, you can pay for the key in advance and receive a code for the key box we have there. The Annex is closed with a DNT key. Registration in guestbook/payment for stay: Upon arrival at the cabin, sign into the guestbook and settle up before departure. Feel free to use DNT’s payment app! With DNT Hyttebetaling on your mobile, cabin-to-cabin trips become even easier! The app also works in cabins without mobile coverage - you then enter your purchases offline at the cabin and pay via the app on your mobile when you get coverage. Provisions: In the Annex, you will always find a good selection of canned goods and accessories for dinner, and dry goods for breakfast and packed lunch. Biscuits and chocolate for coffee are also available in the assortment. About the Annex: Outside the staffed season, self-service accommodation is available in the Annex, which is located in the middle of the courtyard. The cabin is locked with a DNT key. The Annex is equipped with a gas hob and everything you need to prepare and serve food. Information about the cabin, provisions, and other practical details can be found in the cabin. Toilet in the woodshed. The Annex has 4 beds distributed among two rooms that can be booked. In addition, there are 2-4 extra beds in the loft. In KNT’s cabins, we use a sleeping sheet or personal bedding (pillowcase, duvet cover, and sheet). Sleeping bags are not allowed inside the cabins due to hygiene and bed bug issues. The cabin has electricity for lighting and charging possibilities. Mobile coverage. Litjstua with 10 beds functions as an emergency shelter and has extra accommodation capacity if the Annex is full. The key hangs inside the Annex. Remember to sign into the cabin guestbook in the Annex; agree with those staying in the annex regarding cleaning and kitchen use. Nerstua: Nerstua with its 44 beds is rented out to groups during the self-service season. Nerstua has 12 two-bed rooms and 5 four-bed rooms. Newly renovated kitchen with fridge, hob, and oven. It is then not possible to use flush toilets, showers, and other facilities. Water for cooking/washing is then fetched from the river. Dogs can be brought; there is an available room in Litjstua where there is a dog cage. Beyond this, dogs must sleep outside, or possibly in the woodshed; dogs are not allowed in other rooms/common areas due to consideration for allergy sufferers. Garbage/Waste: If possible, take garbage/waste back from your trip. Information on garbage/waste disposal can be found in the information binder at the cabin. Tent: Tenting is not facilitated.
