Facts about Fonnabu tourist cabin: The cabin is located 1443 meters above sea level, in barren high mountain terrain close to Folgefonna. Total number of sleeping places: 44 Number of beds available for booking: 30 Number of beds for drop-in: 14 T-marked trail from Bondhusdalen via Breidablikk. Easiest starting point: Bondhusdalen 55 meters above sea level. Turistvegen 11 km. good trail. Hiking season: July - Oct. Ski season: Spring ski tour on Folgefonna requires experience. Advance booking at Fonnabu is recommended. The Fonnabu cabin is open and accessible all year round. The complex consists of several buildings. The cabin has a pantry with a good selection and what you need for cooking and your stay: kitchenware, tableware, gas, firewood, and candles. There are duvets, pillows, and blankets. A sleeping sheet, own bed linen, or sleeping bag is mandatory. Main cabin 1996: Recently completely renovated with large windows and a spacious living room/kitchen. Oven and well-equipped. 22 beds distributed among 3 bedrooms on the main floor and one bedroom and sleeping loft on the 2nd floor. Pantry and drying room. Emergency cabin 1974: Traditional DNT cabin with 18 beds distributed among 3 bedrooms downstairs and 2 lofts. It is adapted for dogs, with 2 dog crates. No running water or electricity. Gas stove and oven for cooking, wood-burning stove for heating, outhouse. Solar power system for basic lighting. Possibility for mobile charging. Partial mobile coverage at the cabin. It is mandatory to bring your own sleeping sheet/sleeping bag/bed linen. Consider bringing drinking water or filling up at Øyremerkevatnet 1217 meters above sea level. In dry periods, there is little water circulation at the cabin, and snow must be used. The cabin must be tidied, cleaned, and left neat when you depart. Booking and payment Everyone visiting a DNT cabin must pay for their stay. Day visits, accommodation, food, and other services. Dog Dogs are welcome at most BHT cabins in designated areas. Due to allergies, hygiene, and others’ fear of dogs, it is important that dog guidelines are followed. Guide dogs are exempt from housing restrictions and follow their owner. Fonnabu: There are 2 dog crates at Fonnabu. They are located in a bedroom in the emergency cabin. The owner can sleep in the same room as the dog. Dogs do not have access to common rooms in the emergency cabin or to be in the main cabin. Dog overview for other cabins. Dog guidelines: Guests with dogs must book a dog crate. The dog sleeps there at night. Dog facilities are generally in the emergency cabin, with limited access to rooms other than where the dog crate is located. See the overview for each cabin. Dogs must not be on sofas, beds, use blankets or bed linen from the cabin. Bring your own bowl, blanket, and towel. Do not use equipment belonging to the cabin. Clean up well after the dog - also after toilet visits. Always keep the dog on a leash at the cabin and follow applicable leash laws. Be considerate. Your dog can cause fear in others even if it is the world’s kindest. Groups Fonnabu is well suited for groups, but be aware that there can be many guests during high season. Glacier courses, guided tours, and individual visits side by side. Be considerate! Fishing and activities At Fonnabu, the striking view and the glacier attract attention. There are few fishing lakes and hiking trails apart from those leading to the cabin. In July/August, Folgefonni glacier guides organize glacier crossings. This must be booked in advance, and it is recommended to arrive at the cabin the day before. DNT regularly offers glacier courses and organized hiking activities in Folgefonna National Park. Routes to Fonnabu The route to Fonnabu is marked from Bondhusdalen /Sunndal via Breidablikk. The hiking trail has long traditions and has also been called Keiserstien, Turistvegen, and Ridestien previously. The trip to Fonnabu is part of Historiske vandreruter which continues over Folgefonna and down to Tokheim/Odda. Crossing Folgefonna on your own requires good glacier and orientation skills, in addition to glacier equipment. Folgefonna across: The Folgefonnatunnellen has made it easier to cross Folgefonna from Sunndal to Odda or vice versa. It is best to park your car where you descend, and take a bus or taxi to the trail start. (Odda taxi). This is a trip in dramatic surroundings with views of the sea to the west and Hårteigen to the east. The trip over the glacier plateau can offer the full range of weather. Pack for a winter trip, hat, mittens, sunglasses, and sunscreen must be included. Trip description - grading black Bondhusdalen - Fonnabu - summer route - grading black A large parking lot is available at the starting point in Bondhusdalen. The first 4 km into Bondhusvatnet on a gravel road. Popular and good standard. The Bondhuselva river follows the road. It is powerful with strong currents. Be careful and keep your distance! The river is crossed by a bridge - and the ascent up the mountainside begins. A good trail all the way. At 743 meters above sea level, a cozy mountain farm Gardshammar is passed, followed by Botnavatnet. The last 300-400 meters of ascent towards Breidablikk and further to Fonnabu are in rocky high mountain terrain. Snow can lie long in some places, and frost can come early this high up in the mountains. Map of the area DNT always recommends bringing a physical map and compass on your trip.
