Simlebu is the northernmost cabin in Etnefjellene, and the first cabin you reach if you walk SignaTUR Gullruta from north to south. Simlebu consists of two cabins; the main cabin and the emergency cabin. The cabins are nicely situated by a small tarn. To the east, Bordalsnuten dominates. If you go out to the edge, you can see down to Nystølen. To the north, you look deep into Sørdalen, and beyond it, Skjeggesnuten by Folgefonna and Sauanuten rise up. ACCOMMODATION Both cabins have a total of 36 beds, and both cabins have two four-person rooms on the main floor plus a loft. The beds in the rooms can be pre-booked. You can do this on DNT Cabin Booking or go to the “Book accommodation” button on this page. Day visitors and guests who have not pre-booked are welcome. Please agree on bed distribution if there are many visitors. The toilets are in a separate entrance in the emergency cabin. DNT-key In spring 2026, all cabins of Haugesund Turistforening in Etne- and Saudafjella will be locked with a DNT-key. The DNT-key is only for members and for many is the most important membership benefit. You can buy the key in DNT’s outdoor stores and tour centers, at dntbutikken.no, and at staffed DNT cabins. Here you will find a list of sales points around Norway. EQUIPMENT Simlebu is a self-service cabin. This means that the cabin is equipped with what you need for cooking and your stay, including kitchenware, tableware, pantry supplies, duvets, and pillows. An overview of what you can expect in terms of pantry supplies can be found here. The pantry is generally restocked once a year. Guests arrange their own cooking, water collection, washing up, floor cleaning, and tidying inside and out. Remember a sleeping sheet or bed linen; sleeping bags are not allowed. How to use a self-service or unstaffed DNT cabin ACCESS AND HIKING OPPORTUNITIES Simlebu functions well as a day trip destination, as a base for hikes in the local area, and as the first or last stage on a longer trip in Etnefjellene. The nearest neighbor to the cabin is Simlenuten, and the view from there is truly worth a trip up! Those who search can find potholes, swimming holes, and beautiful waterfalls in streams and rivers not far from the cabin. Several marked trails lead to the cabin: From Skromme to Simlebu 5 km, 2 hours walk. Seljestad to Simlebu, 17.2 km and approx. 6 hours walk. From Rullestadvatnet to Simlebu, 7.9 km approx. 2 1/2 hours. From Simlebu to Sandvasshytta, 13 km and approx. 5 hours. Always remember to bring a map and compass! Learn how to use them beforehand: here you will find an introduction. DOG Dogs can be brought into the outhouse section of the emergency cabin (dog crate), but not in common rooms or bedrooms. Dog crates are reserved simultaneously with bed booking. Remember to bring your own food bowls for your dog. Respect leash laws and grazing animals. In Etne municipality, there is an extended leash law from April 1 - October 31. PHONE COVERAGE There is generally poor phone coverage in Etnefjellene. Information about the nearest place with coverage is posted at the cabin. Please bring a screenshot of the order confirmation for pre-booked beds, and your membership number to write in the visitor log when you arrive at the cabin. PAYMENT AND BOOKING You can book a bed at the cabin in advance of your trip. If you book a bed in advance, you are entitled to it as long as you arrive at the cabin by 7 PM. (Ex: A Friday stay must be cancelled by Sunday 11:59 PM at the latest). Cancellations made later than 5 days (0-4 days) before the arrival date do not entitle to a refund.
