Sandvasshytta is Haugesund Turistforening’s oldest cabin, but the cabin from 1930 has now been replaced by a new cabin built in 2010. It appears as a spacious and beautiful cabin. The emergency cabin was built in 1992. EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES Sandvasshytta is a self-service cabin. This means it is equipped with what you need for cooking and your stay, including kitchenware, tableware, and pantry supplies. Guests arrange their own cooking, water collection, washing up, floor cleaning, and tidying inside and out. Remember a sleeping sheet/bed linen to put on top of the made-up beds. Sleeping bags are not allowed. The cabin’s lighting is from a solar power system. During periods of overcast and rainy weather, this may be affected. How to use a self-service or unstaffed DNT cabin LOCATION In the cabin and trail network in Etnefjellene, Sandvasshytta is located by Sandvatnet. See also the “Access” tab here on UT. The nearest cabins are Simlebu (13 km) and Blomstølen (5 km). A room overview for the main cabin can be found by clicking here. 28 of the beds can be pre-booked. You are then entitled to the bed if you arrive at the cabin by 7 PM. You can pre-book beds here. The emergency cabin has one bedroom with four beds, and 10 mattresses in the loft. Drop-in only, no pre-booking. DNT-key In spring 2026, all cabins of Haugesund Turistforening in Etne- and Saudafjella will be locked with a DNT-key. The DNT-key is only for members and for many is the most important membership benefit. You can buy the key in DNT’s outdoor stores and tour centers, at dntbutikken.no, and at staffed DNT cabins. Here you will find a list of sales points around Norway. ACTIVITIES The cabin has its own rowboat. Life jackets must be used when using the boat. Vests of various sizes hang in the outhouse. The Viking grave: There is a Viking grave near the cabin. A good description of how to find it is in a binder at the cabin. PHONE COVERAGE There is generally poor phone coverage in Etnefjellene. There is no phone coverage at Sandvasshytta. Information about the nearest place with coverage is posted at the cabin. Please bring a screenshot of the order confirmation for pre-booked beds, and your membership number to write in the visitor log when you arrive at the cabin. DOG There are 3 dog crates in the outhouse. Dog crates can be reserved simultaneously with a bed. Remember to bring your own food bowl for your dog. Dogs are not allowed in the cabin’s common rooms or bedrooms. Respect leash laws and grazing animals. In Etne municipality, there is an extended leash law from April 1 - October 31. BOOKING AND PAYMENT You can book a bed at the cabin in advance of your trip, follow the “Book accommodation” button. If you book a bed in advance, you are entitled to it as long as you arrive at the cabin by 7 PM. Day visitors and guests who have not pre-booked are welcome. Please agree on bed distribution if there are many visitors. Pay for food and accommodation in the DNT app At self-service and unstaffed DNT cabins, you can easily register and pay for accommodation and pantry supplies in the DNT app. Have you pre-booked? Then the accommodation itself has already been paid for – register only pantry supplies in the app. Remember to download the app before your trip! The app also works without coverage. (Ex: A Friday stay must be cancelled by Sunday 11:59 PM at the latest). Cancellations made later than 5 days (0-4 days) before the arrival date do not entitle to a refund.
