Storavassbu is located by Storavatnet, and the easiest access is from Saudasjøen. The cabin is self-service and was built in 1989, renovated in the summer of 2017. The emergency cabin was built in 2017. EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES Storavassbu is a self-service cabin. This means it is equipped with what you need for cooking and your stay, including kitchenware, dinnerware, and provisions. An overview of what provisions you can expect can be found here. The provisions store is generally restocked once a year. Guests are responsible for cooking, fetching water, washing dishes, cleaning floors, and tidying both inside and out. Remember a sleeping bag liner or bed linen. Sleeping bags are not permitted. How to use a self-service or unstaffed DNT cabin. DNT key. In spring 2026, all cabins belonging to Haugesund Turistforening in Etne- and Saudafjella will be locked with a DNT key. The DNT key is for members only and is for many the most important membership benefit. You can buy the key in DNT’s outdoor shops and tour centers, on dntbutikken.no, and at staffed DNT cabins. Here you will find a list of sales points around Norway. ACCESS The shortest way to Storavassbu is from Skeivane, 5 km and about a 2-hour walk. Here you start the trip at a fenced parking area at Skeivaflåte. Another option is to walk from Frette. This is a 10.6 km hike and takes about 4 hours. Storavassbu is part of the trail network in Etnefjellene and the SignaTuren Gullruta. You can continue north to Blomstølen or extend your trip towards Løkjelsvatnhytta. ACCOMMODATION The cabin cluster has a total of 34 beds. The main cabin has two four-person rooms, and 14 beds in the loft. A room overview for the main cabin can be found here. Beds in the rooms and nine of the sleeping places in the loft can be pre-booked. The emergency cabin has 10 beds in the loft. Four of the beds can be pre-booked. PAYMENT AND BOOKING On DNT Hyttebestilling (or the “Book accommodation here” button on this page) you can book a bed at the cabin in advance of your trip. If you book a bed in advance, you are entitled to it as long as you arrive at the cabin by 7:00 PM. Day visitors and guests who have not pre-booked are welcome. Please agree on bed distribution if there are many visitors. Pay for food and accommodation in the DNT app. At self-service and unstaffed DNT cabins, you can easily register and pay for accommodation and provisions in the DNT app. Have you pre-booked? Then the accommodation itself is already paid for – just register provisions in the app. Remember to download the app before your trip! The app also works without coverage. Practical information about your stay at DNT cabins can be found here. Cancellation of stay: Cancellation up to 5 days before the arrival date gives a full right to a refund. (Ex: Stay on Friday must be cancelled by Sunday at 11:59 PM at the latest). Cancellations made later than 5 days (0-4 days) before the arrival date give no right to a refund. ACTIVITY The cabin has two canoes and a rowing boat for loan. When using a boat, a life vest must be worn. Vests in different sizes are available at Storavassbu. Fishing with a rod is allowed in Storavatnet. There are also good swimming opportunities here. PHONE COVERAGE There is generally little phone coverage in the area. There is no coverage at the cabin, but there is a notice posted about the nearest place with a phone signal. Please bring a screenshot of your order confirmation for pre-booked beds, and of your membership number to write into the visitor logbook when you arrive at the cabin. DOG Dogs are not allowed inside the cabins, except in the smallest cabin on the property: Hundehuset (the dog house). Here there are 2 sleeping places (a bunk bed), a small kitchenette, and guests use the toilet and provisions store in the emergency cabin. Bring your own food bowls for the dog. Remember to book in advance. There is a statutory leash law for dogs from April 1st to August 20th inclusive. In Etne kommune and Sauda kommune, the leash law is extended from April 1st to October 31st. Weather and trail conditions vary greatly. Map and compass are recommended, markings can disappear under heavy snow and in fog. Check current conditions before your trip. In winter: Due to avalanche danger in the scree along Storavatnet, ice on the lake is necessary to reach Storavassbu from Nordstøldalen. As a member, you get good discounts on cabin accommodation.
