The cabin is closed during the wild reindeer calving season from the 2nd day of Easter (April 6th) - June 18th each year. Read more here. Øyungshytta is a self-service HHT cabin that opened in 2018. It is located just outside Hemmeldalen Nature Reserve and within the Rondane South wild reindeer area. LOCATION: Øyungshytta is idyllically situated by the beautiful mountain lake Øyungen in Ringsakerfjellet. Here you are above the treeline, and the soft, gentle mountain plateau landscape opens up during the hike to Øyungshytta. WATCH FILM FROM ØYUNGSHYTTA HERE EQUIPMENT: The cabin is locked with a DNT standard lock that all DNT members can deposit for. The person with a key can bring non-members without a key (they simply pay a different price). There are duvets for the beds at Øyungshytta, so a sleeping bag liner is sufficient for this HHT cabin. Outdoor toilet. Pump well (water must be carried in and out) outside the northwest corner of the cabin. Fireplace and wood-burning stove. Solar power system for light and mobile charging. During the darkest part of winter (Nov-Jan), there may be low battery power due to limited sunlight at this time of year. A tip therefore is to bring a headlamp and possibly a power bank for mobile charging. The cabin has a gas stove with an oven, plus most of the equipment for cooking and eating. Veranda with outdoor furniture (also suitable for use on day trips). Mobile coverage is poor right at the cabin, so it is recommended to walk up the hill behind it. There are paper towels, toilet paper, candles/tea lights, and matches in the cabin. The cabin blends well into the terrain with log frame construction and a turf roof, grey-brown stain and similar color on window frames, a very practical solution with 4 bedrooms (2 double and 2 single) and one dog room. Elegant interior solutions and consistent use of colors inside. SELF-SERVICE PANTRY: There is a food cupboard in the living room (see provisions list here) and you must register food taken on a separate sheet that you leave in the mailbox at the cabin. Pay via the Cabin Payment app or take a note with the amount and account number home and pay either via online banking or Vipps. This also applies to accommodation if, contrary to expectation, you have not booked and paid for it in advance. Remember to state what the payment is for. ACTIVITIES: As of summer 2023, we no longer have a rowboat for loan. It could not withstand the snow load this winter. We apologize. HIKING SUGGESTIONS: This is how we recommend you hike to Øyungshytta in summer: Hiking suggestions on ut.no. Note that winter access follows a completely different route; see access description and simple map in one of the pictures. There are some toboggans in the storage room for loan in winter. The Rondanestien trail north to Lyngbua is quite a long day’s stage, therefore we can suggest the following alternatives northwards: Øyungshytta - Skolla and then from Skolla - Hornsjø. There is no winter-marked ski trail to the cabin. DOG: You can bring a dog to all HHT cabins. At this cabin, there is a separate room with two built-in dog crates. BOOKING AND PAYMENT: At HHT cabins, all beds can be booked in advance, but hikers who have not booked may arrive. If you have not booked and paid in advance, you can pay with the DNT app. Pay for food and accommodation in the DNT app On self-service and unstaffed DNT cabins, you can easily register and pay for accommodation and provisions in the DNT app. Have you pre-booked? Then the accommodation itself is already paid for – only register provisions in the app. Remember to download the app before you go on your trip! The app also works without reception. See our cabin prices here Become a DNT member here HISTORY: Hamar og Hedemarken Turistforening built a new self-service cabin that opened on July 8th in the anniversary year 2018. The demolition of the old, private cabin HHT bought and everything involved in the construction of the new cabin was carried out by Oppland bygg og anlegg from Etnedal. A “winter/snow road” was established with the help of a tracked vehicle, excavator, and grooming machine, and this was used for all materials both in and out. The cabin was opened on Sunday, July 8th, with 300 people present, and incoming county governor Knut Storberget cut the ribbon. As usual, we had excellent cooperation with landowner Pihl as, who has supported and followed this project from day one. Øyungshytta has received support from the surplus of gaming funds from Norsk Tipping. In addition, Sparebankstiftelsen Hedmark, all four municipalities in the Hamar region, and Knud A Rasmussens legat have given very generous donations to realize this unique cabin project.
