Ulvshale Skov

ATTENTION! There are no overnight accommodation sites in Ulvshale skov. Instead, use the Hyldevang shelter site on Nyord and the overnight accommodation sites in Hegnede and Stege/Udby skove. Ulvshale’s beach ridges are deposits from the sea and consist primarily of flint stones, which over time have been washed out of Møns Klint and carried by the sea to Ulvshale. The flint stones are ground completely round by the journey along the coast from the cliff to Ulvshale, and are called “kugleflint” (ball flint). The beach ridges are clearly visible in the forest, where many forest floor plants find it difficult to grow in the stony soil. The forest does not resemble any other East Danish forest. Large parts of the forest are untouched, appearing as “primeval forest” where only the paths are kept open. The forest contains many of Denmark’s naturally occurring tree species - including Denmark’s largest population of small-leaved lime and also stands of the rare Swedish whitebeam. In addition to the forest itself, meadows and heath-covered areas are included in the publicly owned land. Centrally in the area is a simply furnished nature center with a picnic house and information, and if one continues via the bridge to the island of Nyord, Hyldevang Naturcenter can be found there.
