Glarborg en tidligere Glashytte.

The truly extraordinary thing about this farm is that a glassworks was originally located beneath it! It may have been one of the very earliest glassworks in Denmark, built here in the early 1500s. The reason it was established here in the middle of Gribskov is that glass production requires large quantities of wood to fuel the glass furnace. The raw materials for glass production were lime, soda, and quartz sand. These were transported to the site in barrels, on a horse-drawn cart. Therefore, an oven for producing glass was built here, in the middle of the forest. It was built of square sandstone, and a hut was built around the oven. Therefore, such an old glass production site was often called a ‘glashytte’ (glass hut). While production was ongoing, the forest was cleared in larger and larger circles around the Glashytten. Gilleleje museum conducted a series of minor archaeological investigations of this site in the years 2003 to 2006.
