Tjuenborgkoia

Tjuenborgkoia is located south of Høgfjell, on the mountain ridge Hestebrenna. It is cabin number two on Vassfarstien, a marked hiking trail of 116 km with 7 overnight stays, running from Hønefoss city center to Strøen. Tjuenborgkoia takes its name from Tjuvenborgen, the prominent hill with three steep sides that can be seen from a distance. The peak is also known for the robber’s cave where, according to legend, thieves and robbers held the shepherdess Tiril-Tove from the mountain farm captive until she, with feminine cunning, managed to outsmart the robbers. The trip down to this peak and the robber’s cave is a nice detour from the hut. Or you can “climb” past it on the way to the hut. From Tjuenborgkoia, there is a fantastic view towards the blue mountains in the east, and just west of the hut, you can see Norefjell to the west and Tjuvenborgen to the south. From Tjuenborgkoia, you can also reach the Oslo area’s nearest treeless mountain, Høgfjell at 1009 meters above sea level. You reach this by following the route to Vikerkoia. Location The fastest access from the east is from the parking lot at Langtjern; there are two routes here. The westernmost route via Rundkollbekken is the easiest, it is 6-7 km. To Langtjern, there is a toll road from Flaskerud by Ringmoen. From the west, the fastest access is from Saksentjern, or from Nedre Kollsjø. Both places are reached via a toll road that branches off the road between Sokna and Strømsoddbygda. From Saksentjern, you can either go via Tjuvenborghula and Tjuvenborgen, or via Vesle Leintjern. It is about the same distance, but the westernmost route is the easiest to walk. It is approx. 4 km. Equipment Tjuenborgkoia is an old log cabin from 1942 with two bedrooms and eight beds, as well as a combined living room and kitchen with a fireplace and wood-burning stove. The kitchen is simply equipped but contains most of what you need for a cozy cabin trip. In addition, the hut has an annex with a family bunk bed and an extra bed in the “drawer.” In Juliussenbua, dogs are allowed, and there is a dog bowl, dog crate, and wood-burning stove, as well as a small kitchenette. Juliussenbua was the first building on the property and was used as a hunting cabin. Juliussen was renovated in 2016. Tjuenborgkoia can be used all year round and is locked with a DNT-key. Water is available in the well near the hut, but it should be boiled if used for drinking water. You can also bring water from Tjuenborgbekken or Saksentjern. Hut-to-hut suggestions 1. Tjuenborgkoia is the second cabin on the beautiful Vassfarstien, a 116 km long hiking trail from Søndre Torv in Hønefoss to Fønhuskoia by Strøen. From Tjuenborgkoia, it is 16 km to Vikerkoia and 16 km to Ellingseterkoia. Day trip suggestions 1. Evening trip to Hestebrenna and Tjuvenborgen, 1 hour. 2. War memorial Partisansteinen, 2 hours (see trip 29 in “40 trivelige turer på Ringerike” book). 3. Høgfjell and Gullknappen, 3-4 hours (see trip 32 in “40 trivelige turer på Ringerike” book). Supervision at Tjuenborgkoia: At DNT Ringerike, we have a cabin manager and an assistant who supervise the cabin. They can be contacted for questions. You can also contact the administration of DNT Ringerike, but often the supervisors have as much or more knowledge about the cabin. For booking questions, only the administration can answer. Everyone can use the cabin, but only DNT members have access to the key. The person responsible for the booking must be at least 18 years old. Those who pre-book have priority for the beds in the hut. However, no one can be turned away. The DNT-key can be purchased at our Tour Center in Storgata 6, Hønefoss. The cabin is available from 2 PM on the arrival day until 2 PM on the departure day. The Tourist Association’s cabins are for outdoor recreation, and parties are not permitted at the cabin. When you book a spot at our huts, you simultaneously confirm that you have accepted our terms and cancellation policy. Day visits Day visitors must pay for their stay if they use the cabin for cooking or light the stove. In that case, they pay for a day stay. Day tourists must leave the cabin by 6 PM at the latest. Payment For advance booking, you pay online immediately. Otherwise, you can pay after the trip using the DNT cabin payment app, or Vipps to 113915.
