Buvollen

The open cabin Buvollen is located 300 meters east of the Forra river at Buvollen, an old mountain farm pasture in Elgvadsfoss statsallmenning in Stjørdal municipality, about 400 meters above sea level. According to local historian John Ole Fossbakk, legend has it that there were permanent residents at Buvollen and several other mountain farm pastures in the area during the Middle Ages. From about 1650, Buvollen was a mountain farm for the Buan farm in Forradal. Mountain farming ceased in 1936. The last dairymaid was Martine Buan. Buvollen was a large mountain farm pasture with two mountain farm huts, a cow and goat shed, and a hay barn. In 1950, Statskog began larger forestry operations in Elgvadsfoss statsallmenning. A barrack for forestry workers was then set up at Buvollen, while the old hay barn was converted into a stable. The forestry barrack was moved to Aunvollen in 1957, where it still stands. The timber was floated on the rivers Forra and Stjørdalselva to the sawmill. In 1989/90, one of the remaining mountain farm houses at Buvollen was restored. Forest inspector Per Negård stipulated that materials from the old hay barn/stable had to be used. The mountain board was responsible for the restoration work. This building, along with an associated outhouse, are the only buildings at Buvollen today. The original mountain farm house has been open for public use since 1989. It is widely used and is a popular hiking destination. In 1989, an agreement was made between Vigden/Elgvadsfoss fjellstyre and Statskog regarding the operation and maintenance of Buvollstua. Statskog and the mountain board each own half of the cabin with furnishings, as well as the outhouse. The agreement is still valid. The cabin is approx. 25 m2, has a wood-burning stove and gas for cooking. Sleeping space for four. Located near Øvre Forra nature reserve. Good hunting and fishing opportunities and a great area for berry picking and outdoor life.
