Elgsjøhytta

Elgsjøhytta is located by Elgsjøen in Knutshø Landscape Protection Area in the southeast mountains of Oppdal. Statskog owns the cabin, but it is operated by Opdal Jæger & Fiskarlag (OJFL). Due to a general wish for reduced traffic in connection with wild reindeer calving in Knutshø Landscape Protection Area in spring, Elgsjøhytta will not open its rental season 2026 before June 18th. The cabin consists of: A large main room with wood heating, a kitchenette with a gas stove, a dining table, a lounge area, and four bunks. Separate bedroom with two bunks. Inner hallway with wardrobe shelf/coat hooks, laundry room, composting toilet, and storage closet. Outer hallway with a large firewood box, shelves, dog crate, and solar power central unit. The main firewood store is external. Water is fetched from an outdoor tap (surface water from a stream) or from Elgsjøen. Otherwise, the cabin has solar panels for lighting and two USB outlets for charging mobile phones etc., kitchen equipment, firewood, tallow candles, lamp oil, matches, fire extinguisher, smoke detector, etc. The beds have good mattresses and pillows with inner covers, and are intended for use with a clean sleeping bag and your own pillowcase. Additionally, there are four fishing rods with light spinning reels without hooks, and three otter boards without line. The boathouse has an entrance from the lakeside, and there is an aluminum boat, oars, motor, boat fuel, life vests in various sizes, 9 fishing net lengths, buoys, buckets/tubs etc. Rental of the cabin includes the right to use the boat including fuel, net fishing with up to 9 fishing net lengths, 3 fishing licenses for the area, so that up to 3 people renting the cabin can fish simultaneously. NOTE: Everyone under 16 years fishes for free outside of this quota. Fishing in Elgsjøen. As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that Elgsjøen is on inatur.no’s list of 10 recommended mountain lakes for trout fishing in Norway: https://tips.inatur.no/10-anbefalte-fjellvann-for-sommerens-%C3%B8rretfiske. In addition to net fishing, it is permitted to use: Rod, hand line, otter board, fixed line, and worm line. Separate fishing rules for Elgsjøen have been prepared, which must be familiarized with before fishing begins. These can be found in a separate PDF attachment on the cabin’s information page on inatur.no. Net fishing in Elgsjøen. NOTE: Net fishing in the area is not permitted from September 1st, to and including October 15th. Included in the cabin rental is the right to use the 9 net sets hanging in the boathouse. Each of these net sets is comprised of two nets, where mesh size varies between 18, 22, 24, and 26 mm. For net fishing, there must be two active fishermen to set and retrieve the nets. In the boathouse, there are buoys and cans to be used for properly marking the nets. NOTE: Only the nets belonging to Elgsjøhytta may be used in Elgsjøen! In other words, it is not permitted to use privately brought nets. Fishing in the area. The fishing licenses included with the cabin rental also apply to the right to fish in all other rivers and lakes on Drivstua Fjellstueutmåling and on the part of Hjerkinn Fjellstueutmåling located in Oppdal. Excepted are Flåmbekken and the lower part of Elgsjøbekken. Generally, there is trout in all lakes and streams with fish. In Finnsjøen and Hansontjønna there is also Arctic char, and in Horrtjønna there is grayling. Elgsjøen, Heimtjønn, and Haugtjønnin with associated streams have very fine trout. Fishing licenses for the area can also be purchased from Statskog; Statskog’s Norway Card for inland fishing. Persons who have purchased their own fishing licenses from Statskog can fish in the area independently of the 3 licenses included in the rental of Elgsjøhytta. Use of boat. The right to use the cabin’s boat, motor with integrated fuel tank, and adapted fuel, is included in the cabin rental. A spare drain plug for the boat hangs on the kitchen wall in the cabin. Life vests in various sizes hang in the boathouse. It is the boat user who is responsible for ensuring that everyone in the boat has safety equipment. Important: The boat, engine, and nets must be cleaned and the nets hung in their respective places in the boathouse before the cabin is vacated. Cabin and cancellation rules. Upon departure, the cabin must be left clean and tidy, the firewood box in the outer hallway refilled, the outdoor area tidied, and the external firewood store secured against weather and wind. In the boathouse, the boat, nets, and other equipment must be cleaned and put back in place. And last but not least: Remember to take all trash and empty containers with you after your stay. For cancellations up to 30 days before the stay begins, 85% of the amount will be refunded. For cancellations between 30 - 7 days before the stay begins, 50% of the amount will be refunded.
