At Gullhorgabu, there are high ceilings and a welcoming atmosphere! Feel free to choose the historic military road from Småbrekke on your way to Gullhorgabu. Well-marked and several highlights along the way! Facts about Gullhorgabu tourist cabin: The cabin is located 851 masl in barren mountain landscape. Total sleeping capacity: 41. Number of beds available for booking: 29 Number of beds for drop-in: 12 T-marked trail from Småbrekke, Kvitingen, Høgabu, and Vending. Easiest starting point: Småbrekke in Bergsdalen, 8 km on a T-marked trail and military road. Hiking season: June - Oct. Ski season: Marked with branches from Småbrekke from approx. week 9. Pre-booking is recommended at Gullhorgabu. Cabin host during parts of the summer season and on autumn weekends. Gullhorgabu cabin is unlocked and accessible all year round. The facility consists of a main cabin and an emergency cabin. There are sleeping places and equipment for overnight stays in both cabins. Gullhorgabu has a provisions store with a good selection and otherwise everything you need for cooking and your stay: kitchenware, crockery, gas, firewood, and candles. There are duvets, pillows, and blankets. A sleeping sheet/liner, own bed linen set, or sleeping bag is mandatory. Main cabin: Large common room and spacious bedrooms. 35 beds are distributed across 8 bedrooms with single beds and family bunk beds. High chairs. Provisions store and a good drying room. Emergency cabin: 6 sleeping places and dog crates. Located close to the main cabin and woodshed/outhouse. Separate building between the main cabin and emergency cabin with an outhouse and woodshed. Possibility for mobile charging. No mobile coverage at the cabin. It is mandatory to bring your own sleeping sheet/liner/sleeping bag/bed linen set. The cabin must be tidied, cleaned, and look good when you leave it. Booking and payment Everyone visiting a DNT cabin must pay. Day visits, accommodation, food, and other services. Prices 2026. Dogs 3 dog crates are provided at Gullhorgabu. They are located in the emergency cabin. There, the owner can sleep with the dog. Dogs do not have access to the main cabin. Dogs are welcome at most of BHT’s cabins, in designated areas. For reasons of allergy, hygiene, and others’ fear of dogs, it is important that guidelines for dogs are followed. Guide dogs are exempt from residency rules and follow their owner. Gullhorgabu: 3 dog crates in the hallway in the emergency cabin. Dog and owner do not sleep in the same room. Dogs have access to common rooms in the emergency cabin, not the main cabin. Dog overview for other cabins. Guidelines for dogs: Guests with dogs must book a dog crate. The dog sleeps there at night. Accommodation for dogs is generally in the emergency cabin, with limited access to rooms other than where dog crates are located. See overview for each cabin. Dogs should not be on sofas, beds, or use blankets or bed linen from the cabin. Bring your own bowl, blanket, and towel. Do not use equipment belonging to the cabin. Clean and wash thoroughly after the dog - also after toilet visits. Always keep the dog on a leash at the cabin and follow applicable leash laws. Be considerate. Your dog may cause fear in others even if it is the world’s kindest. Groups Gullhorgabu is well suited for school classes/teams and associations during weekdays. Relatively short distance and a good trail make it attractive to many. Fishing and activities There are several fishing lakes in Bergsdalen/Kvammafjella. Common fishing license for the entire area located in Vaksdal municipality. Contact person is Per Brekke. Fishing lakes and bathing pools are strung like pearls. Småbrekkebukken and Bjørnaknausen are nearby summit destinations from the cabin - with magnificent views over the area. Otherwise, the round trip around Gulltjørni and along the military road is popular to hike. Nice and varied hike in the mountains and 10 km by road if you have not arranged transport between Lid and Småbrekke. A stop at Bergsdalstunet by Lid is also recommended. Here they have the best strawberries in season, and if you’re lucky, it’s open for coffee/food service! Gullhorgabu Tourist Cabin is part of the SignaTUR Bergsdalen/Kvammafjella route. Bergen og Hordaland Turlag operates many cabins in Bergsdalen/Kvammafjella! Routes to Gullhorgabu The routes to Gullhorgabu are T-marked from Småbrekke, Kvitingen, Høgabu, and Vending. The routes have varying degrees of difficulty. For hikers without much mountain experience, the route from Småbrekke is recommended; it follows the cultural-historical “Militærvegen” (Military Road), built as a transport route between Voss and Samnanger in the late 1920s. Here, highlights await. Be aware that early in the summer, a challenging snowdrift may lie on the path at Storlitjørn. An alternative route to Gullhorgabu has therefore been cairned on the west side of Storlitjørn. It is recommended if you are unsure about crossing. The route is marked on the map in the image series.
