Villa Vibrandsøy

Villa Vibrandsøy is originally a house from 1875. The house has been recreated as a dignified villa and was fully restored in 2022. Most of Vibrandsøy consists of green, unspoiled cultural landscape. The island is green and lush with sheltered bathing coves and a long coastline. Location Just 800 meters from Haugesund city center is the island Vibrandsøy, which consists of 5 islands, most of which are connected by footbridges. The island is not connected to the mainland and has no roads, but is easily accessible by boat/canoe/kayak and scheduled boat service. Urban outdoor life! Equipment The main building has a well-equipped kitchen suitable for all users. Grill available - bring charcoal. On the east side, with views towards the city, there are two living rooms. One living room has several dining tables and the other is furnished with sofa and seating arrangements. Toilets in the hallway. The entire first floor is wheelchair accessible. On the second floor, there are five bedrooms with a total of 18 sleeping places. All bedrooms are named after Knutsen boats (See more under History). Two rooms have 3 beds, a double bed below and a single bunk above. Three rooms each have 4 beds, with two single beds and one bunk bed. The single beds are separated from the bunk bed by a wall. Laundry room and toilets. The outbuilding has its own wet room section. Here are four bathrooms with showers, toilets, and sinks, as well as a small utility closet. There are two bedrooms with 5 beds in each room: one regular bunk bed and one bunk bed with two sleeping places below and one above. Both bedrooms have wheelchair access and one has direct access to an accessible bathroom. Bring your own bedding or sleeping bag liner. Sleeping bags are not permitted. The cabin is unstaffed, meaning all food must be brought. There is toilet paper, firewood, and cleaning supplies (soaps) for cleaning the cabin. Activities The opportunities for outdoor recreation are great with wonderful areas for canoeing and kayaking, recreational fishing, swimming, and hiking. In the middle of the island lies Matlaug, a lagoon-like area with shallow beaches that invite exploration of tidal life, catching crabs, shrimp, and “stinter”. Frilager Haugalandet has two sit-on-top kayaks for rent by the guest jetty. A trip to the day trip cabin Varøy is recommended. Cancellation of online booking: Cancellation up to 5 days before the arrival day gives full right to a refund. (Ex: A Friday stay must be cancelled by Sunday 11:59 PM at the latest). Cancellations made later than 5 days (0-4 days) before the arrival day do not entitle to a refund. Access Vibrandsøy can be reached by private boat or scheduled boat from Haugesund Hurtigbåtkai (at the inner quay). See kolumbus.no for departures and ticket purchases. ATTENTION! Not all departures stop at Vibrandsøy, so read the timetable carefully and book your ticket in advance (at least 40 min. before departure). History Shipowner Ole Andreas Knutsen bought Vibrandsøy in 1872, and a few years later built this house, which is called the Knutsen Villa among Haugesunders. In 2017, Haugesund Turistforening bought this Swiss chalet-style villa from 1875, and it is DNT’s most urban cabin (as of 2022). Most of the uncultivated land on Vibrandsøy is a state-protected outdoor recreation area. In 2009, Haugesund municipality bought most of Vibrandsøy from the estate of shipowner Ole Andreas Knutsen. The same year, the municipality adopted a new zoning plan which means that large parts of the archipelago are reserved for outdoor recreation and nature conservation. On the island, there are many protected and preserved buildings: stately 19th-century residences, large boathouses from herring fishing, and lighthouses. Haugesund Turistforening was awarded the conservation prize 2023 by Fortidsminneforeningen in Rogaland for the restoration of Villa Vibrandsøy.
