About this spot

NOTE! At least one person in the touring party MUST be a member to use Troms Turlag’s cabins. Only members can purchase a DNT key. There are two cabins at Gaskas, an old one from 1970 and a new one from 2002. They are located by Altevatnet/Alddesjávri in southern Indre Troms. Nordkalottruta, E1, and Grensesømmen pass through here. The cabins can be used all year round with a DNT key. Location There are two alternative starting points for the route: From Altevasshytta-Gaskashytta: 12 km, 3-4 hours. Part of E1, Nordkalottruta, and Grensesømmen. From Altevasshytta over the stream just east of the cabin and up along the stream and across the hills northeast of the cabin. Not much ascent and eventually gradually downhill towards the year-round bridge over Vasskardelva. After the bridge, the northernmost cabins are passed, then along vehicle tracks over and between the marshes up to the year-round bridge over Koievasselva. After the bridge, the path turns downhill along the river almost to Livatnet and then along the lake. The path follows the hillside below Lifjellet, sloping through birch forest, up to Lifjelltangen (landslide area). Then down to the year-round bridge over Luotnajohka and then along nice hills with birch trees up to the cabin. Alternatively, one can follow the road from the dam along the north side of Altevann. 9 km, approx. 3 hours from the path at the road end until you meet the path from Altevasshytta by the bridge over Vasskardelva. Rooms Gamle Gaskas and Nye Gaskas have a total of 18 beds (10+8). Gamle Gaskas has 8 beds distributed across 2 bedrooms (4+4) and 2 beds in the living room. Nye Gaskas has 8 beds distributed across 2 bedrooms (4+4). Outdoor toilet. Equipment All Troms Turlag cabins have a wood-burning stove for heating, gas burners for cooking, and kitchen equipment. All cabins, except those close to towns, have duvets and pillows. Bring a sleeping bag liner or sleeping bag. It is recommended to bring candles, matches, and toilet paper for personal use, in case they are missing at the cabin. Nye Gaskashytta has solar power for lighting and USB charging. Water Water is collected from the river east of the cabins. A path leads down to the river from Gamle Gaskas. In winter, go straight ahead from the exit door, past the outhouse towards Vuoma and down to the river. There is usually an open channel where you can collect water. Dog It is possible to have dogs in the outer hallway of Nye Gaskashytta, where there are 3 dog cages for our four-legged friends. The hallway of Gamle Gaskashytta is not well suited for dogs, as it is very small and has a cold stone floor. We therefore recommend visitors with dogs to book Nye Gaskashytta. Dogs are not permitted in living rooms and bedrooms. There are now 2 great dog houses at this cabin cluster. The houses are built by Troms Prison, and there are chains on the houses to which dogs can be fastened. Bring your own mat for the dog, and your own dog bowl. It is not possible to pre-book the dog houses. Booking and payment See booking link on the right for advance booking and payment for accommodation. Not pre-booked? Pay for accommodation in the DNT app. Remember to download the app before you go on your trip! The app also works without reception. For best offline functionality, you should open the app before the trip. Payment can also be made with Vipps, Paypal, cash (at some cabins), bank transfer, and at the touring association office. Read more about cabin payment at Troms Turlag’s cabins here. Commercial use of Troms Turlag’s cabins All businesses and commercial operators who bring guests and groups to Troms Turlag’s cabins must contact the touring association office well in advance of each trip to arrange this. There are separate prices for commercial use; information about prices can be read here. Prices are independent of whether individuals are members or not. One person in the group must have a valid DNT membership. Only members can get access to the key. All guests in the group must be registered in the visitor log. NOTE! The cabins must not be used by businesses and commercial operators on weekends, during winter and Easter holidays, public holidays (Ascension Day, Pentecost), as well as May 1st and 17th. DNT membership As a member, you get member prices at DNT’s 550 cabins, offers for trips and courses nationwide, the member magazine Fjell og Vidde, and a range of good member discounts on outdoor equipment, travel, accommodation, insurance, and concerts. Children and youth have particularly good discount schemes for accommodation. Membership is also an important contribution to over 22,000 km of marked trails that create hiking experiences for the whole country. Become a member here. Activities From Gaskashytta, there are plenty of routes that take you through the most beautiful high mountain areas in Troms. An example is the trip to Vuomahytta, where you also pass through valleys and birch forest on your way. Or you can take a trip from here to Kirkesdalen, a little-used route with great experiences. The journey goes up the beautiful Luodnavaggi, through Altevasskaret and down to Sæterdalen where you follow the river to Kirkesdalen. Other Mobile coverage There is good mobile coverage at the cabin.
