A new and modern tourist association cabin for environmentally conscious mountain hikers. LOCATION Bjørneggen is located in Stordalen in Meråker municipality. Stordalen is a very important hub in the northern part of Sylan and the eastern part of Skarvan/Roltdalen National Park. It is both an entry point and starting point, a destination in itself, and part of the already established trail and cabin network on both the Norwegian and Swedish sides of Sylan. BOOKING You decide whether you want to book cabin accommodation in advance. Bed space can be booked in advance here. For group bookings, please contact us by email [email protected]. Pre-booked beds are available from 14:00 on the day of arrival until 14:00 on the day of departure. NB: Booked beds that have not been used before 21:00 will be released after 21:00. The cabins are always open for drop-ins even if all beds at a cabin have been booked, and consideration must be shown and arrangements made for other visitors. Here’s how to use our cabins: The Cabin Visit from A-Z. It is not possible to book beds at Bjørneggen during the period April 25th - June 1st at Bjørneggen. This is the most vulnerable period for the reindeer cows during calving season. As Bjørneggen is located in a calving area, we wish to avoid as much traffic as possible in these mountain areas during this specific period. EQUIPMENT The cabin is self-service. A self-service cabin solution means that the cabin is well-equipped, and we will arrange for a cabin host solution on a voluntary basis. The cabin has running water, a water closet, shower, sauna, dishwashers, ovens, hobs, and a drying room. The cabin has road access all the way and is universally designed. Bjørneggen has a total of 38 accommodation spaces. ACTIVITIES From here, there are many opportunities for short and long hikes; both summer and winter, and for both adults and children. Åsberget outdoor recreation area is being developed in connection with the cabin. The goal of developing the area is to give children, youth, and people with disabilities the opportunity to experience nature and the joys of outdoor life in a simple way. A lean-to shelter has been set up, a fire pit has been established, and an accessible outdoor toilet has been built so far, and we see that neighbors, cabin users, and others use this. Eventually, there will be a separate gravel path from the cabin up to Åsberget. DOG In a separate part of the cabin, dogs are welcome. PAYMENT You pay for accommodation when you book in the booking system. Remember to sign into the guest book as usual when you arrive at the cabin. HISTORY Old Bjørneggen was marked by the ravages of time and no longer met the standards required today, neither regarding quality nor safety regulations. Nord-Trøndelag Turistforening therefore chose to build an entirely new cabin on the same plot. Bjørneggen is located in an area with historical traditions. There are large iron extraction sites from several thousand years ago, and over 250 years of mining, including Lillefjell mines and the historic Hyttskriverstuggu at Gilså, and galena extraction in Kluken. Bjørneggen is also central to the reindeer husbandry industry, which has been practiced in the area for many centuries, and is now under the leadership of Essand Reinbeitedistrikt (Saantin Sijte), which has 9 siida units. The construction and operation of Bjørneggen shall be carried out in such a way that it causes the least possible disadvantage to the reindeer husbandry industry. Therefore, much emphasis will be placed on information that contributes to increased knowledge and understanding of both Sami culture and the reindeer husbandry industry. During vulnerable periods and in connection with calving season, access to use the cabin may be limited, and we will engage in dialogue with the reindeer district regarding activities in the area. It is our wish and our vision that the use of the area shall be adapted to the operations of the reindeer district and that we can contribute to promoting Sami culture. Essand reindeer district has contributed positively throughout the entire process. And our intention is that the cabin and the surrounding area should reflect both mining and reindeer husbandry, while also encouraging more people to visit the beautiful mountain areas. The cabin and the outdoor area by the cabin will be an important arena for information about reindeer husbandry, Sami culture and language, mining, and about the national park and protected areas.
