Vilsted Sø

Vilsted Sø and the meadows around the lake are a unique piece of new Danish nature, created between 2002-06 as one of Denmark’s largest nature restoration projects. Vilsted Sø has an area of 450 ha, making it the largest freshwater lake in Region Nordjylland. The nature area’s total area is 919 ha of lake, reed forest, and meadows, of which 860 ha are managed by Naturstyrelsen. Since its restoration, Vilsted Sø has developed a rich birdlife, especially with waterfowl and wading birds. The lake is located near Vejlerne in Hanherred and is part of an internationally important bird area with them. The area offers ample opportunities for outdoor life. There is a cycling and walking path around the lake, a riding trail on the north side, several primitive campsites, an “all-year shelter” at Ranum, opportunities for canoeing and kayaking, free fishing, a bird tower, accessible fishing spots, etc. Vilsted Sø is owned by Aage V. Jensens fonde and managed by Naturstyrelsen, Himmerland.
