Ekkodalen

Ekkodalen is part of Ekkodalen-Kelseådalen, which stretches 12 kilometers from Vallensgårds Mose to the sea at Saltuna. Bornholm’s bedrock was formed between 1.7 and 1.4 billion years ago during the geological period Precambrian. At the end of the Precambrian, more than 500 million years ago, the rift valleys on Bornholm emerged, including Ekkodlaen. Movements in the bedrock created tensions that caused the bedrock to crack, and the cracks were filled with molten magma from underground. As the magma cooled, the volcanic rock diabase was formed. Over millions of years, the diabase, which is softer than granite, eroded away, so the rift valley today appears with granite sides. Ekkodalen is best known for its echo, which is best experienced from Ørsteds Kilde. Follow the signs from the parking lot. If you take the red hiking route Ekkodalsstien or the yellow hiking route Klippestien, you will pass through the impressive rift valley, and part of the trip takes place on so-called boardwalks (plank bridges). The hiking routes also lead past Jægerhuset, an old hunting lodge, where you will find information boards describing Ekkodalen’s geology, history, and nature.
