About this spot
The discovery of highly saline groundwater on Rønnerne at Læsø sometime in the past created the basis for extensive salt extraction on Rønnerne throughout the Middle Ages. Archaeological investigations in recent years have uncovered how. In the outer part of the salt marsh, where the saline groundwater was found, hundreds of salt evaporation huts were built. These were simple buildings with turf walls and a central fireplace where flat evaporation pans were suspended. Each evaporation hut was surrounded by a number of wells from which the saline groundwater was drawn. Today, the ruins of the many saltworks can be seen as grass-covered mounds, especially on Kringelrøn east and south of Fuglsangssøen. Two replicas of the evaporation huts have been erected by the bird tower, where salt is evaporated throughout the summer.
