Kapelbanke og Sct. Gertruds Kilde

Address: Karlsgårdevej, Sig, 6800 Varde. Parking: Drive from Sig along Karlsgårdevej, turn left after a small forest - 400 meters from the viaduct. A short walk through the forest reveals the memorial stone. You can continue down the slope to the shelter site, where there are tables and benches. Here, a fantastic view of the river can be enjoyed. The Holy Spring: Many legends exist about the spring’s healing powers. It was first mentioned in 1638 as Sct. Birritis spring, likely named after an Irish national saint. In 1687, the spring was called Sct. Gertrud’s spring - the sick and infirm were said to have been healed here again. Sct. Gertrud, a Frankish saint, was the patron of travelers. It was said that the spring was bottomless. The spring is no longer visible, but has likely been used since the Iron Age.
