Close to the train station, Rallarveg, and marked routes both summer and winter, this is a popular place to be all year round! The complex consists of Steinboligen and Lokalet. The cabins have different qualities. Choose the one that best suits you and your travel companions! For larger groups, Lokalet is recommended. Facts about Hallingskeid turisthytte: The complex is located 1049 meters above sea level in high mountain terrain. Total number of sleeping places is 53. Divided into 30 in Steinboligen and 23 in Lokalet. It is possible to rent the entire Lokalet. In Steinboligen, you can book a room, a bed, or arrive without booking. Read up on the terms. During school holidays and on autumn weekends, Hallingskeid has a cabin host. Easiest starting point: Hallingskeid station. The train stops in a tunnel, only 200 meters from the cabin. Season: All year round, but be aware of weather and wind. Winter wisdom. Proximity to train station. The Hallingskeid complex consists of two cabins. They are unlocked and available all year round. The complex has running water and electricity, but an outdoor toilet in combination with the main cabin, Steinboligen. There is a provision store with a good selection and everything you need for cooking and your stay: kitchen utensils, tableware, and firewood. There are duvets, pillows, and blankets. A sleeping sheet, personal bedding, or sleeping bag is mandatory. Steinboligen Steinboligen is the “main cabin” and has 30 beds distributed among 8 bedrooms. Rooms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 for room booking, rooms 5 and 8 for bed booking, and room 6 for drop-in. Running water and electricity. There is a newly renovated kitchen, a large common room, good drying facilities, and two washrooms. The outdoor toilet is located in the “cold hallway” in the cabin. Note that there are no shower facilities. Cot/chair. The provision store is located next to the kitchen. Dog-friendly. Lokalet Lokalet has 23 beds distributed among 2 bedrooms and a large loft. Spacious kitchen, living room, drying room, and 2 washrooms. Toilet and provision store are in Steinboligen. There is electricity and running water, but note that there are no shower facilities. There is no flush toilet, but an “outdoor toilet” located in a cold hallway in Steinboligen. There you will also find the provision store. Not suitable for dogs. Lokalet is well-suited for group visits and can be rented as a single unit all year round - with the exception of school summer holidays. Lokalet is very well-suited for outdoor-related courses/training as you are close to nature in a safe environment. Facilities: Hallingskeid is well-adapted for children, with the possibility of cots and high chairs. Books and games are available. Steinboligen has bedrooms on the main floor, but to enter you must use stairs. The area is not particularly steep and has many hiking trails. In winter, snow cave digging and ski play are popular right outside the cabin. With the train station and Rallarvegen just a few meters away, it’s great for children at Hallingskeid. Dog Dogs are welcome at most of BHT’s cabins in designated areas. Due to allergies, hygiene, and others’ fear of dogs, it is important that dog guidelines are followed. Guide dogs are exempt from housing restrictions and follow their handler. Hallingskeid: There are two dog cages in the woodshed located in Steinboligen. The room is not heated, and it is not possible for the owner to sleep with the dog. The nearest bedroom is room no. 3. Dogs are not allowed in common rooms, bedrooms, or Lokalet. Dog facilities are generally in the emergency shelter, with limited access to rooms other than where the dog cage is placed. See overview for each cabin. Dogs must not be in sofas, beds, or use blankets or bedding from the cabin. Bring your own bowl, blanket, and towel. Do not use equipment belonging to the cabin. Tidy and clean thoroughly after the dog - also after toilet visits. Always keep the dog on a leash at the cabin and follow applicable leash laws. Be considerate. Your dog can cause fear in others even if it is the world’s kindest. Groups Hallingskeid is well-suited for groups throughout the year, but be aware that there can be many guests during high season. Avalanche courses, group hikes, and individual visits side by side. Be considerate! For larger groups, Lokalet is recommended. Feel free to bring a fishing rod. You can buy a fishing permit online. Go to inatur.no and find Ulvik statsalmenning. The border with Aurland søndre statsalmenning runs north of Hallingskeid, over Skomahøydene. So if you are fishing in Aurland municipality, you must have your own permit. Aurland offers fishing permits valid in 7 different permit zones. Some waters are private, and here you must have a fishing permit from the landowner. (NB: There is a “Norgeskort for fiske” issued by Statsskog. It applies on state-owned land, but NOT on statsalmenning (common land). Statsalmenning is marked on newer hiking maps). Regardless: There is good fish in the area, and it may be worth the trouble to obtain a fishing permit if you like to wander around with your fishing rod. Otherwise, hiking destinations are plentiful at Hallingskeid! Rallarvegen passes right by. It is popular on foot, by bike, and on skis in winter. The area also offers swimming holes, mountain peaks, and many marked routes. Right by the cabin, it’s great in winter to dig caves, build igloos, and sled. Marked winter route to Finse and Geiteryggshytta in winter from the school’s winter holiday. Weather is an important factor in the Finse - Hallingskeid areas in winter. It changes quickly, and you must have good equipment in your backpack even on day trips. The best ski trips require stable and good weather, but further into the valleys, along the marked trails, and along Rallarveien, one can walk reasonably well even if visibility is reduced and the wind picks up a bit. Routes to Hallingskeid Many routes lead to Hallingskeid both summer and winter. Several of the routes are long and can be demanding due to length, weather, and conditions. Familiarize yourself well with trip descriptions and always consider your fitness level, competence, and weather conditions when planning a trip in the high mountains.
