About this spot

Trollfjordhytta – spectacular location! The cabin complex is beautifully situated above the famous Trollfjorden on Austvågøy. It consists of Store Trollfjordhytta (built 2018) and Lille Trollfjordhytta. There is also a combined emergency shelter and sauna. Right by the cabin, you will find Isvasshaugen (marked height 504 on the map) with a spectacular view down towards Trollfjorden. Here you also have mobile coverage. If you love sharp peaks, you have also come to the right place. But remember, the mountains here are so spectacular that you should know well what you are doing before you attempt them. Trollfjordhytta is perhaps one of Norway’s most spectacular winter hiking destinations for those seeking steep terrain in winter. Hardly any place near a trekking association cabin offers so many unexplored couloirs and descents. We recommend everyone who takes a boat trip to Trollfjorden and Trollfjordhytta to stay at least two nights at the cabin. This will give you more time to enjoy the view and the mighty mountain range, relax in the sauna, and unwind with a well-stocked cabin library. Rooms There are a total of 20 beds at the cabin complex. In Store Trollfjordhytta, there are two large bedrooms with sleeping space for six in each room. This cabin is locked with a DNT key. In Lille Trollfjordhytta, there are beds for eight. This cabin is unlocked. See room overview Store Trollfjordhytta PDF / See room overview Lille Trollfjordhytta PDF All guests must bring either a clean sleeping sheet, clean bedding, or a sleeping bag. Bring alcohol-based disinfectant for personal use. Equipment The cabin is fully equipped with everything you need in terms of cups and dishes for cooking, gas, firewood, pillows, and duvets. There are also candles, paper towels, and toilet paper in the cabins. Feel free to bring your own drying towel for washing dishes. The cabin has solar lighting. There is no provision store at the cabin, and no waste disposal system, so you must take all waste back with you. It is forbidden to use spiked shoes/crampons inside the cabins. The complex has 12V solar power and the possibility to charge mobile phones. Drinking water Is fetched from the stream in the yard or from one of the lakes by the cabins. Here you also fetch water for the sauna. Dog Dogs only allowed in the hallway/common room in Lille Trollfjordhytta. Dogs not allowed in Store Trollfjordhytta. You pre-book a spot for your dog in the same system as you book a bed, and the dog owner must, of course, stay in the same cabin where dogs are permitted. Booking and payment We have good experiences with pre-booking and encourage it. Then you don’t have to think about payment after your visit. The person responsible for the booking must be at least 18 years old. Upon arrival before 7 PM, you have the right to the bed you booked. If you arrive after 7 PM, you are entitled to another available sleeping place. You can still visit the cabin without pre-booking. Then you must wait until after 7 PM to choose a bed, as it may be booked. If all beds are booked, you still have the right to stay overnight at the cabin. If you have not pre-paid, you must settle up after your cabin visit with Vipps, PayPal, bank transfer, or cash in the cash box at the cabin. Everyone using the cabin must sign into the guestbook at the cabin. Here are useful tips about booking. Commercial groups must contact us by email: [email protected] before booking/visiting. DNT membership When you join DNT Vesterålen, you support our work to strengthen outdoor life and protect our shared natural heritage, and you help us take even better care of our cabins and routes. As a member of DNT Vesterålen, you get good discounts at our cabins and other membership benefits such as discounts in selected sports stores. Activities The trip up to the cabin from Austpollen or from the jetty at the innermost part of Trollfjorden is a great experience in itself. Here you have Vesterålen at its wildest. Ascending Wallenheia (587 meters above sea level) can be tricky enough if you choose the wrong path between the rock faces, but with a bit of cunning, it works out. A good tip might be to keep somewhat to the left up the ridge. Beautiful view from the top of the hill eastward towards Raftsundet. A detour to Øvre Austpollvatnet, about an hour’s walk from the cabin, can quickly pay off for the passionate angler. Here there is fine trout, perfectly sized for the frying pan at Trollfjordhytta. For a small stroll after afternoon coffee, a five-minute walk directly south is recommended, with a nice view of Trollfjordvatnet and Trolltindan. If you want to extend the return trip to the cabin, take a turn some distance down Trollfjordryggen, along the safe winter route up from Trollfjorden. But should you wake up one morning feeling in great shape and ready for a summit trip, then Blåskavltinden (975 meters above sea level) is the one. A demanding trip that provides close contact with the wildest wilderness in beautiful Vesterålen. The route is drawn on the aerial photo on page 222 in «På tur i Vesterålen og Lødingen» and page 172 in «På tur i Vesterålen». This cabin has received support from the proceeds of Norsk Tipping’s gaming funds.
