About this spot
Booking and payment for accommodation and provisions: It is now possible to book/reserve a bed in our cabins. Approx. half of the bed capacity is allocated for this at the cabin. Bed reservations can be made via the individual cabin on UT.no or DNT cabin booking. Provisions are paid using the new DNT app. It is important to note that bed reservations are only valid until 7 PM on the day you have booked. If you wish to pay after your stay, use the new DNT app. This can be downloaded from Play or App Store. Before your trip, we recommend the checklist. Should difficulties arise with payment/use of the payment app, you will find information on how to contact us at the cabin. Local trail report/board for Gullsteinvollen: From approx. 27.05.26 there is an outdoor toilet at Gullsteinvollen, meaning the WC in the cabin is closed. The trail from the pass between Jurtind and Skarven down to Gullsteinvollen is unfortunately unsatisfactorily marked due to a disagreement with the landowner. There are also some wet, boggy sections on the trail down that can be challenging. Be careful! Gullsteinvollen is the second cabin on the Fjordruta when starting from Kristiansund airport. Most of the cabins and tours on the Fjordruta are easily accessible and child-friendly. Fjordruta also has SignaTur status. SignaTur is a collection of Norway’s finest long-distance hikes – carefully selected, quality-assured, and highly recommended by DNT. More information about Fjordruta and its SignaTur status on fjordruta.no. Location: The cabin is located on Tustna in Aure municipality. It is situated at the end of Gullsteinsdalen and offers a nice view to the west over the ocean and Smøla. Around the valley lie the mountains Skarven, Jørgenvågsalen / Jurtind and Knubben; these alpine peaks are great hiking destinations, and the route options from Gullsteinvollen are numerous. A weekend at Gullsteinvollen to explore this area is recommended! If you need suggestions for nice trips from Gullsteinvollen, you can find them here: Trips from Gullsteinvollen. It is also possible to take other trips on Tustna when in the area; other trip suggestions for the area can be found here: Day trips on Tustna. In the river below Gullsteinvollen, there is a nice swimming hole, where it is convenient to swim and wash after the trip. The trip to/from Trollstua to Gullsteinvollen can be done either as a hike over Jørgenvågsalen/Jurtind or through the pass between Skarven and Jurtind at the top of Gullsteinsdalen. If you are on a day trip to Gullsteinvollen, we recommend using the parking lot by the church at Gullstein or the parking lot at Veiset. The path up to the cabin starts at the crossroads by the church. An alternative route is the forest road that starts a few hundred meters towards Leira. Registration in the visitor protocol/payment with “DNT Cabin Payment”: Upon arrival at the cabin, you register in the visitor protocol and settle your payment before departure. Feel free to use DNT’s payment app! With DNT Cabin Payment on your mobile, hut-to-hut hiking becomes even easier! The app also works in cabins without mobile coverage - you download the app, register your purchases offline at the cabin, and pay via the app on your mobile when you get coverage. The DNT key: Some of our cabins are locked with a DNT key. We have several outlets for the key; see overview and information on our website here (scroll down a bit on the page). If you land by plane at Kvernberget, you can pay for the key in advance and receive a code for the key box we have there. Gullsteinvollen is locked with a DNT key. Provisions: At the cabin, you will always find a good selection of canned goods and dinner accessories, and dry goods for breakfast and packed lunch. Biscuits and chocolate for coffee are also available in the assortment. About the cabin: The cabin is open all year, but locked with a DNT key. There are kitchens in both the main cabin and the annex, equipped with gas hobs and everything needed to prepare and serve food. Information about the cabin, provision prices, etc., and all other practical details can be found in the main cabin. WC is in the main cabin. You can reserve a bed via DNT cabin booking. Electricity/mobile: The cabin has 12V power for lighting and charging possibilities. The cabin has mobile coverage. Regarding mobile charging, we sometimes experience some technical challenges. We therefore recommend a power bank as a backup. Beds/accommodation: There are a total of 15 beds in the main cabin and the annex combined, furthermore there is space for 12 people on a loft/floor bed and 2 on sofas. In KNT’s cabins, we use a sleeping sheet or brought bed linen (pillowcase, duvet cover, and sheet). Sleeping bags are not permitted for use inside the cabins due to cleanliness and bed bug issues. Dog: The dog and its owner can also stay indoors at Gullsteinvollen. Arrangements have been made for dogs in the annex, which can be booked. The dog must be in a crate when indoors, and only be indoors under supervision. It must not enter the main cabin or other rooms, this is due to allergy considerations. We ask that this be respected. Water: Water from a tap outside the main cabin. In periods of little rain and prolonged drought, there may be little water in the hose by the cabin. Water is available in the swimming hole 200 meters from the cabin. Garbage/Waste: If possible, take garbage/waste back from your trip. Information about garbage/waste management can be found in the information binder at the cabin. Tent: There are no provisions for camping. If you are tenting, remember to pay for a day visit/tent, and that tents should be placed a good distance from the cabin. For stays at the cabin after 6 PM, regular overnight fees apply. Fishing: Read more about inland fishing and buying fishing licenses in Aure municipality here. This cabin has received support from the surplus of gaming funds from Norsk Tipping.
