Volunteer work is planned at Vardadalsbu from June 26-28. This weekend, it would be good if you found another cabin alternative so the volunteer crew can have good working conditions. Vardadalsbu is located at the foot of Eldhusfjellet, which is said to be Stølsheimen’s best viewpoint. The cabin connects several routes in the western part of Stølsheimen. The area is characterized by many mountains and sparse vegetation. No shortcuts lead you to Vardadalsbu. Here you must take the long way yourself - but the reward is great when you arrive! Facts about Vardadalsbu: The cabin is located 887 meters above sea level in barren high mountain terrain. Total number of sleeping places: 20 Number available for booking: 15 Number of beds for drop-in: 5 T-marked trail from Stordalen, Straume, Steinsland, Norddalshytten, Skavlabu and Svartavatnet. Hiking season: Last part of June - beginning of Oct. Snow can lie long into the summer. Advance booking is recommended. The Vardadalsbu cabin is unlocked, accessible all year round, and consists of a main cabin and an emergency cabin. There are beds and equipment for overnight stays in both cabins. In the emergency cabin there are 3 beds and dog crates. Vardadalsbu has a pantry with a good selection and otherwise what you need for cooking and your stay: kitchenware, tableware, gas, firewood, and candles. There are duvets, pillows, and blankets. A sleeping sheet, own bed linen, or sleeping bag is mandatory. Main cabin: Cozy cabin with 15 beds distributed among 2 bedrooms on the main floor and a room/loft on the attic. Pantry. No running water or electricity. Gas stove/oven for cooking, wood-burning stove for heating, outhouse. Solar power system for basic lighting in the main cabin. No mobile coverage at the cabin. Mandatory to bring your own sleeping sheet/sleeping bag/bed linen. The cabin must be tidied, cleaned, and left neat when you depart. Dog Dogs are welcome at most BHT cabins in designated areas. Due to allergies, hygiene, and others’ fear of dogs, it is important that dog guidelines are followed. Guide dogs are exempt from housing restrictions and follow their owner. Vardadalsbu: 3 dog crates in the emergency cabin. Dog and owner live and sleep in the same room. No access to the main cabin. Dog facilities are generally in the emergency cabin, with limited access to rooms other than where the dog crate is located. See the overview for each cabin. Dogs must not be on sofas, beds, use blankets or bed linen from the cabin. Bring your own bowl, blanket, and towel. Do not use equipment belonging to the cabin. Clean up well after the dog - also after toilet visits. Always keep the dog on a leash at the cabin and follow applicable leash laws. Be considerate. Your dog can cause fear in others even if it is the world’s kindest. Groups Vardadalsbu is suitable for smaller groups. Fishing and activities Summer 2026, Smalavatnet (Langavatnet) will be drained by Eviny. This will lead to challenges for fishing in the lake and also be unsightly. There are few fish-rich lakes by Vardadalsbu, and no fishing license is required. Otherwise, the following applies to inland fishing in Norway: “Everyone over 18 years old must pay a state fishing fee if they wish to fish in watercourses with anadromous salmonids (salmon, sea trout, and sea char). In addition, you must buy a fishing license. A state fishing fee is not required to fish in freshwater where there is no salmon, sea trout, or sea char.” This part of Stølsheimen is barren with many mountains and lakes. Rapid weather changes mean that sun, fog, and precipitation can be on the menu on the same day. The routes are marked and cairned, but always bring a map, compass, and necessary safety equipment. In contrast to the areas in eastern Stølsheimen, this area is less suitable for families with small children. Trip suggestions Many routes lead to Vardadalsbu, and you don’t have to choose the toughest, although it is absolutely the most magnificent. With a little creativity regarding transportation, good round trips can be found. In late winter, the cabin and area are popular among those who enjoy unusual spring ski tours. If you have an extra day and the weather is good, the trip over Taket or Seljestigen is a great experience. Alternatively, you can take a day trip on the high-altitude plateau, and finish with a trip to Eldhusfjellet. In winter, experience with high-mountain skiing is needed to go to Vardadalsbu, and it requires reasonably good weather. Vardadalsbu is part of the SignaTUR Stølsheimen route.
