Roastgamma

Around 1930, Kåre Grådal and Hartvig Thørn erected a hut with a 2.25x2.75 m footprint made of horizontal split logs and with a turf roof. The two were unemployed and planned to live off hunting, fishing, and berry picking in Femundsmarka. However, the hut was illegally erected, and this was reported to Kopperverket, which was the landowner at the time. There was a lawsuit, and the hut had to be demolished. Kåre and Hartvig instead built a type of gamme with vertical logs and sloping walls, and this one was allowed to stand. But space inside was somewhat tighter. During the war, the two men supplemented their income by smuggling snus from Sweden. Kåre Grådal (1911-1945) was a skilled carpenter and violin maker, but he could not make a living from it. He spent increasingly more time in Femundsmarka. As the craftsman he was, he apparently also arranged for electric light here in the hut, with the help of a water wheel in the stream, bicycle wheels, a bicycle dynamo, and flashlight bulbs. He became good friends with Stor-Hans (Hans Olof Hansson, 1870-1946, who lived in Femundsmarka from 1908 to 1946), and they often went together to carry equipment for tourists in the area. During the war, Kåre was a courier. On May 9, 1945, he crossed the ice on Femunden to retrieve hidden rifles in a “hollow log” inside Granbekkvika. He fell through the weak spring ice and drowned – only a ski pole was found. By agreement with Statskog, Røros fjellstyre had a new gamme built here in 1984/-85. The gamme was erected by members of Røros Jeger-og Fiskeforening. Statskog took over as owner from 2004. The gamme is located in Femundsmarka National Park. Fishing, small game hunting, and berry picking in easy hiking terrain. Roastgamma is also called Roastkoia or Roastkoja.
