About Fieldfarehytta: Fieldfarehytta is a faithful replica of the wartime quarters that Kompani Linge officers and Tourist Association members Joachim Rønneberg, Birger Strømsheim, and Olav Aarsæther built in the spring of 1944, and where they spent the last year of the war. The three had sabotage training from Great Britain, and with several different missions in Norway and England behind them, they were dropped into Tafjordfjella to destroy communications in Romsdal and Lesja. The cabin is named after the operation Rønneberg, Strømsheim, and Aarsæther were to carry out, “Fieldfare.” Read more about the operation on Lokalhistoriewiki and see Fieldfare-ruta, Historisk Vandrerute. The cabin was rebuilt by Joachim Rønneberg in the summer of 1990 and then given as a gift to DNT Sunnmøre. Location: The cabin is well hidden under a rock overhang about 1 km from Veltdalshytta, in the middle of Tafjordfjella. Rooms: Fieldfarehytta is an emergency shelter with very simple standards. It has three bunks/beds marked with the names of the resistance fighters who lived here one winter during WWII. A sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and camping stove are necessary. It has no heating or cooking facilities, and is partially snowed in during winter. The floor consists of planks directly on the ground, and the back wall is rock. At Veltdalshytta, there are period-appropriate buttoned sleeping bags for use at Fieldfarehytta. The bags must be returned to Veltdalshytta after use. Remember your own sleeping sheet inside the sleeping bag. Remember that Fieldfarehytta is also a museum, and other guests may stop by to see the cabin even if they have not booked a spot. Equipment, heating, water: There are no heating or cooking facilities here. Water can be fetched from the lake outside. Dog: Dogs can sleep on the floor in the cabin. Bring your own blankets for it to lie on. Tours and activities: From the cabin, one can take day trips to Tordsnose, Naushornet, and Karitind, to name a few. Also visit Veltdalsmuseet, where one can see how hydropower construction workers lived in the 1920s, as well as objects used during Operation Fieldfare during WWII. Nearby is also the old forge, with all equipment intact. The area has many cultural heritage sites from earlier times, which can be found on kulturminnesok.no. Booking, payment, and membership: At Fieldfare-hytta, you can book and pay for accommodation in advance. If you choose not to book, beds may be reserved until 9 PM. At self-serviced and unserviced DNT cabins, you register and pay for accommodation, day/tent visits, food, and other services in the DNT app. If you have pre-booked: the accommodation is already paid, and you only need to pay for food from the provisions room in the app. Remember to download the app before your trip! Membership and key: DNT members get reduced prices on accommodation, but the cabin is open to everyone. The cabin is unlocked all year.
