Rondvassbu

Rondvassbu is the center of Rondane and is a very popular cabin with tempting peaks on all sides. The cabin is beautifully situated at the southern end of Rondvatnet. Directly behind the cabin towers Svartnuten, and beyond that, one Rondane giant after another stretches towards the clouds - Vinjeronden, Storronden, and the chief himself, Rondslottet (2178 masl). Rondvassbu is DNT Oslo og Omegn’s largest cabin in Rondane. Rondvassbu was built in 1903 and purchased by DNT in 1929. Since then, the cabin has been extended and rebuilt numerous times. Opening hours: Rondvassbu is usually open from the beginning of March until and including Easter, and from mid-June to mid-September. Opening hours for 2026 can be found further up the page. Self-service quarter: To improve living conditions for wild reindeer in Rondane, the Ministry of Climate and Environment has adopted an action plan. As part of the plan, the self-service quarters at Grimsdalshytta, Rondvassbu, and Bjørnhollia will be permanently closed after Easter 2026. The measure is intended to protect wild reindeer during vulnerable periods such as late autumn, mid-winter, and the calving season in spring. Rondvassbu has a self-service quarter available all year except when Rondvassbu is staffed and during the reindeer calving period from May 1 to June 10. Remember DNT key. Book via hyttebestilling.dnt.no. Boat across Rondvatnet: In 2026, there will be daily boat departures across Rondvatnet from June 19 to August 23. During the last three weeks of the season, there are departures on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The boat has several departures if not everyone can fit on scheduled tours. Hiking tips: Rondane offers many great peak hikes, and with Rondvassbu as a base, you can reach many 2000-meter peaks as day trips. In addition, Rondvassbu is a natural overnight stop on round trips through Rondane. Classic round trip in Rondane (The Triangle): If you have four to five days available and want to experience Norway’s first national park, you should try this classic round trip through Rondane. The trip takes you around Rondane’s largest contiguous mountain area, separated by Rondvatnet, Illmanndalen, and Langglupdalen. Rondane from North to South: Walk from Hjerkinn and approach Rondane’s major peaks day by day, including through Dørålglupen, called “The Gateway to Rondane” by many. Then the trip continues among the majestic peaks and out on the other side, down towards soft trails in Ringebu. Peak hikes: Storronden (2138 masl), Rondslottet (2178 masl), Veslesmeden (2015 masl). Read more about tours and activities at Rondvassbu and in the surrounding area. Facilities: Rondvassbu has 128 beds. These are distributed in 2-bed rooms, 4-bed rooms, and dormitories. All beds have duvets and pillows with covers. Please use your own sleeping bag liner. Sleeping bag liners or bed linen can also be rented at the reception. The cabin has hot and cold water in the hall of the service building, and generator power (220V). It can still be useful to have a flashlight in your backpack as the generator is turned off at approximately 11 PM every evening. There is a separate building with an outdoor toilet, showers, and a drying room. Rondvassbu has a license for beer, wine, and spirits. Membership card: Remember to bring a valid membership card. School classes and similar groups: Rondvassbu welcomes school classes. At the cabin, there are nature science books, children’s and youth books, and games. There is also some simple equipment for outdoor activities such as balls, bocce, and Kubb.
