Storekrakkoia is located 889 meters above sea level in Bogen with panoramic views of Vassfarporten (the entrance to Vassfaret). It is situated at the top of the mountain forest with wide views. Here, snow is guaranteed with skiing conditions until May. On late summer evenings, the cloudberry marshes can glow yellow, and you can enjoy two beautiful sunsets, first over Søre Dyttholknatten, then over Sæterknatten before falling asleep to the rush of Fjellelva, perhaps after a small evening swim. Storekrak consists of two cabins, Storekrak and Veslekrak. The main cabin was restored in 2015 and has a kitchen and two bedrooms with 6 beds. In addition, there are 2 reserve spots in the loft. It has solar panels and a phone charging option. The emergency cabin Veslekrak was opened on September 15, 2012. It has 3 beds, and dogs are permitted for visitors. Here too, there is a kitchen with a propane burner and a wood-burning stove. Both cabins are locked with a DNT key and can be used all year round. The cabins have wood-burning heating and propane. Water Water is collected from Fjellelva west of the cabin. There is a gentle path behind Storekrakkoia, and it’s about 30 meters down to where water is collected. There is a sign where water is collected. There is a nice swimming hole at the bottom of the river, so water should be collected where the sign indicates, where the water flows in a small waterfall. Swimming There is a nice swimming hole at the bottom of the river; this is marked with a sign so it is easy to find. Go through the gate past Storekrakkoia and down the small path to reach the swimming hole. Here you can wash yourself after a long mountain hike, or take a refreshing dip on a warm day. Dog Dogs are allowed in Veslekrakkoia, and there are both a cage with a blanket and food/water bowls for our four-legged friends. We appreciate it if the dog stays in its cage as much as possible inside the cabin, especially if it is dirty after a long mountain hike. Dogs are not allowed in the beds (almost unnecessary to write it, but we do so anyway). Remember to observe the leash law and that there are many sheep in the area during summer. Fishing There is good trout fishing in Steinhyttevatna and in Fisketjern. Steinhyttevann is a half-hour walk from the cabin, and Fisketjern is a 3/4-hour walk from Storekrak. There are good fishing opportunities all summer, but the best fishing is in August. With worm or lure, you can catch trout between 200 and 500g. There are generally larger fish in Fisketjern. Biking It is possible to bike to Storekrakkoia, but not further. The path to Storekrakkoia is a gravel road. It is a steep ascent, approximately 5 km and 350 meters of elevation. Suggested hut-to-hut trips from/to Storekrakkoia Storekrakkoia is cabin number five on the beautiful Vassfarstien, a 116 km long hiking trail from Søndre Torv in Hønefoss to Fønhuskoia by Strøen. From Storekrak, it is 13.7 km to Buvasskoia, which is before Storekrakkoia on Vassfarstien, and 19.5 km to Vassfarkoia, which is after Storekrakkoia on Vassfarstien. Suggested nice day trips from Storekrakkoia 1.) Harehopp, Tolvvasskollen, approx. 6 hours. Follow the blue-marked trail towards Vassfarkoia. After the trail intersection (where the trail towards Sørbølsetra/Gulsvik continues south), we turn west; after a steep incline, Ørneflag is passed on the north side. Continue past Tolvvatna to Harehopp. Harehopp is an emergency cabin that is open, has 2 beds, a stove, and can be used for rest/overnight stays. West of Harehopp lies Tolvvasskollen (1284), which is Vassfarområdet’s highest peak. Same way back to Storekrak. 2.) Steinhyttevatnet, Storrustefjell, Fisketjern, approx. 4 hours. Follow the unmarked path that goes up behind Veslekrak. A road at the start that turns into a path along Steinhyttbekken. On idyllic rocky outcrops, Steinhyttbekken is crossed before you reach Steinhyttevatnet (just under an hour’s walk from Storekrak. On the north side of the lake is the stone hut that gave the lake its name. Huge boulders form three of the walls of the “cabin”). 3.) Fisketjern Follow the blue-marked trail (Vassfarstien) towards Buvasskoia. After about 3 km, you will reach Fisketjern, which is located just before the highest point on the route between Storekrak and Buvasskoia. The area called Storrustefjell has no marked routes, but with good visibility and map/compass, it’s a nice circular trip to do these two as a round trip. Supervision at Storekrak At DNT Ringerike, we have a cabin manager and an assistant who supervise the cabin. They can be contacted with questions. You can also contact the administration of DNT Ringerike, but often the supervisor has as much or more knowledge about the cabin. For booking questions, only the administration can answer. Booking Storekrakkoia (and Veslekrakkoia) is unstaffed and opened with DNT’s standard key. Anyone can use the cabin, but only DNT members get access to the key. The person responsible for the booking must be at least 18 years old. Those who pre-book have priority for the beds at the cabin. However, no one can be turned away. DNT key can be purchased at our Touring Center in Storgata 6, Hønefoss. The cabin is available from 2 PM on the day of arrival until 2 PM on the day of departure. The Tourist Association’s cabins are used for outdoor recreation, and it is not permitted to have parties at the cabin.
