About this spot

The tourist cabin beneath the brow of the sky is where mountain people meet! Gaustatoppen Turisthytte is located almost at the very top of Gaustatoppen (1883 meters above sea level). The cabin was built as early as 1893, using natural stone from the mountain top. ATTENTION! Due to storm Dave, Gaustatoppen Turisthytte will be closed on April 5th. Travel in the area is currently discouraged. The tourist cabin has been expanded and renovated internally in recent years, including a new cafe, new living room, and new toilets. From the tourist cabin and Gaustatoppen, you have an incredible view over large parts of Southern Norway. From February 7, 2026, the cabin is open for accommodation for groups of at least 6 people. Accommodation is booked via email to [email protected]. Smaller groups/individuals can stay overnight after May 11, 2026, but can book their stay as early as November 3, 2025. See info and opening hours for accommodation below, and click the “book accommodation” button on this page. The tourist cabin is staffed and serves food and drinks daily during the winter and summer seasons, which last until and including the autumn holidays. Overnight stays are possible, but must be pre-booked. The cabin has a full license, so bringing your own alcohol is not permitted inside or outside the tourist cabin. Gaustatoppen Turisthytte is certified as an Eco-Lighthouse. It is possible to order lunch/dinner for larger groups outside of high season. We accept card and Vipps. Booked via hyttebestilling.dnt.no. It is not possible to arrive unannounced, as for safety reasons, no extra mattresses are available. The cabin’s hallway/porch can be used as an emergency shelter if something unforeseen happens, but there are no extra mattresses there. If the railway is used to get up, one must be there half an hour before the railway closes. See opening hours at gaustabanen.no. There are a couple of hundred meters (approx. 30 meters elevation) of Sherpa stairs from the railway to the cabin. Cancellation policy Cancellation of the stay can be done without extra cost up to 8 days before arrival. (Ex: A Friday stay must be cancelled by Sunday 11:59 PM at the latest). Cancellations made later than 5 days (0-4 days) before the arrival day do not entitle to a refund. Dogs at the cabin Unfortunately, it is not permitted to bring dogs inside Gaustatoppen Turisthytte, but for day visits and overnight stays, the cabin’s porch can be used as a dog room. The porch is not insulated, and there are no dog cages there. Dogs staying overnight must be able to sleep alone and tolerate the company of other dogs. Wild reindeer on the plateau Wild reindeer are continuously losing living areas to move in the mountains. Cabin construction, roads, and energy development occupy important grazing areas and migration routes, and human activity can affect the animals’ land use. Both hikers and wild reindeer enjoy wandering, and we often use the same areas. It is important that we consider the wild reindeer when hiking in their realm. Read more about wild reindeer conservation here. This cabin has received support from the surplus of gaming funds from Norsk Tipping. For questions outside of the season, contact DNT Telemark’s touring center at 35 52 25 55/[email protected].
