Flinteovnen

Until the end of the 1700s, there were only a few fishing houses - called Plushusene - and a sconce where Rødvig is located today. In the mid-1800s, the first breakwaters were built, and simultaneously, customs and pilot services were established. Soon there was a need for a proper harbor for shipping grain and other agricultural products, and since the establishment of the railway in 1879, significant urban development has occurred. In the busy fishing harbor - one of the largest on Sjælland - hammers can be heard from the boatyard, and here the many activities and tools of the fishermen can be observed. The large, well-equipped marina provides a good atmosphere. There are good swimming beaches on both sides of the harbor. The clean, clear Baltic Sea water offers opportunities for recreation along with activities such as angling, surfing, and diving. Rødvig Skibsmotormuseum has a unique collection of ship and boat engines - some of which can be started, and the familiar, nostalgic “tunk-tunk” sound can be relived. A decommissioned fishing cutter - KE100 Vivi - has been placed ashore behind the museum and offers the opportunity to see how a traditional Danish fishing cutter was equipped. Rødvig Flinteovn is the town’s landmark. Previously, similar kilns were used to transform flint nodules into a hard powder that could be used for the production of porcelain and glaze. The flint was heated to around 1000 degrees and then rapidly cooled. In recent years, several galleries and craft shops have established themselves. Together with the old Royal Privileged Inn from 1844, several restaurants, and shops, they provide excellent facilities for tourists and residents. Rødvig is an attractive town with easy access to forest and beach. At the same time, it is possible to reach Copenhagen by train in just over 1½ hours. A campsite, cabin village, and several summer houses, along with many sailing tourists, contribute to multiplying the population during the summer months.
