About this spot
Rugbjerg Plantation is 164 hectares and located approx. 4 km north of Rødekro. East of the plantation, main road 24 and motorway E45 lead to the border. There is access to the forest from Stadsvej, which runs through the plantation from north to south. In the northern part of the Plantation, there are 3 Bronze Age mounds, as well as a stone sheepfold. Iron Age graves have been found in the aforementioned heath area. There was activity in the plantation during both World War I and World War II. In the first war, a powerful cannon battery with concrete bunkers was built in 1916-1917 as part of the so-called Sikringsstilling Nord (Northern Emplacement). The bunkers are still in the plantation, as well as a few hundred meters south (Andholm Battery). Free camping is allowed in the plantation, meaning overnight stays are permitted everywhere except in enclosures and on ancient monuments. Open fires are prohibited.
