Wild camping in Luxembourg: is it allowed? (2026)
Wild camping is prohibited in Luxembourg, but bivouacking (one night, a lightweight tent, kept discreet) is tolerated in most places — except around the Upper Sûre reservoir.
What's allowed

Luxembourg is small, but green and hilly — perfect for a night under the stars. Free wild camping is officially prohibited here, and in principle camping is only allowed at recognised campsites. Even so, bivouacking — one night, a lightweight tent, set up discreetly — is tolerated in most places, as long as you treat nature with respect.
Where it is allowed
Bivouacking off the beaten track is permitted from sunset to sunrise: you pitch your tent late and take it down again in the morning. On private land you may stay overnight with the owner’s permission, with a maximum of two tents. Anyone travelling by car or campervan may stay one night to rest and recover their fitness to drive.
Where it is not allowed
The main exception is the Upper Sûre reservoir (Lac de la Haute-Sûre / Esch-sur-Sûre), where staying overnight and bivouacking — even on private land — is prohibited, because it is a drinking-water reservoir. Wild camping is also not permitted in nature reserves without permission.
Open fires
Open fires and barbecues are prohibited in forests and nature areas. Use only a gas stove, and take extra care during dry spells.
